No more free housing for criminals in BG

Go to jail in Bowling Green and you pay the bill, judge says

I give props to the judicial system in my home town of Bowling Green, Ohio for making criminals, rather than the taxpayers, pay for their stay in the county jail at a rate of $60 per night.

  • My problem with this is where does the money come from? If they are in jail and don't earn money there, the ones punished are parents, kids or siblings. Hmmmm...

  • I wonder if a persn is in jail and not earning an income, who pays the fee? Parents? Children? Siblings? A different government agency?

  • I'm pretty sure they're going after the money after they have been released from the county jail so the criminal would be footing the bill. I can see your point, though, if someone else had to bone up the cash while they're in the slammer.

  • Personally, I think this is awful. There is a high correlation to poverty and crime. If the person wants to start over, which is pretty hard to do with a criminal record, a one year stay is over 20,000 dollars which compounds the poverty they were in to commit the crimes anyway. I feel this is a bad, bad idea.

  • Hmmm... Cheaper than most hotels, warm bed, fresh food... and we wonder why repeat criminals get in, get out, back in, etc. My uncle is an example.
